Summary

Team: ETD - Informatics
Description: After the success of his last Masterclass we have invited Professor Denis Protti to speak again on the use of EHR systems across Europe and the world.

An international trend appears to be taking hold, namely the use of 'single patient, single record' approaches to the EHR. Professor Denis Protti will summarize the state of affairs in this regard in the USA, Sweden and Spain as well as in Canadian jurisdictions.

In 2001, less than 3% of physicians were fully automated in the region of AndalucĂa, Spain. Now more than 70% use a computer system, called Diraya which integrates all the information on each user, so that it is available when and where it is needed for his/her care.

In 1995, the northern Swedish region of Norrbotten mandated that everyone - including all Primary Health Centres (PHC) and hospitals - would use a single common system. One of the justifications was to eliminate the problems surrounding the electronic transmission of referrals between sectors and different computer systems. Apparently, this County has the lowest IT costs in the country. This is approach is now being taken up in at least 7 other counties. Though some GPs were involved in the procurement process, the decision was made at the County level and based on the recommendations of the County's IT department. The new system was first installed in the two hospitals within the region in 2004; in late 2006 and all fifteen PHCs have now been converted to the new system.

Delegates will have the opportunity to examine the different worldwide EHR systems and question Professor Protti on his experiences of them. Professor Protti has a wealth of information in the area of Informatics, and this Masterclass would be of real value to anyone interested in international experiences of implementing EHR systems.

The Masterclass will also closely cover the challenges faced by these, European and worldwide, countries to ensure the data they held about patients was safe, secure and obtainable when needed. These challenges will be used as evidence to answer the question is the dream of the Single Care Record possible.
